Short Bio of Ziauddin Ahmed, M.D.FACP
Professor of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia
He is a Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, USA. He was graduated from Dacca Medical College, Bangladesh in 1976 . He did his medical residency training from Mercy Catholic Hospital in Philadelphia and Nephrology Fellowship from Medical College of Pennsylvania. He has earned American Medical board certifications in 4 specialties including Internal medicine, Nephrology, Critical care Medicine and Geriatrics. He has trained hundreds of medical students and medical residents, 90 Nephrology fellows and served as an advisor to PhD students. He has received intramural , extramural and international grants for research and education. He has published many papers in peer reviewed journals and peer reviewed presentations at the national meetings. He served in many college and hospital committee including as a chairman of quality improvement in the department of Medicine for many years. He served as president of medical staff in Medical college of Pennsylvania hospital. He is also Medical director and CEO of Dialysis clinic Inc. of Philadelphia.
He was director of renal sister organization of International society of Nephrology. He served as member of editorial board in VA health system journal and serving as international editor of Bangladesh Renal Journal.
Social and Cultural:
He was president of Bangladesh Association of Delaware valley (a tristate organization of Philadelphia, South Jersey and Delaware established in 1971) in 1989-91, convener
of 3rd National Bengali Poetry conference of USA in 1997, vice chairman of Kazi Nazrul Islam Conference committee ( established in 1990) and hosted 12th Nazrul conference in Philadelphia in 2010, hosted Climate conference in Philadelphia in 2010, He is one of the organizers of Bangladesh 1971 Genocide conference at Kean University , NJ in 2008 and 2009, He is the chairman of Physician panel of Bangladesh Environmental Network (BEN), vice chairman of distressed children and infant international USA.He has created numerous documentaries including : The origin of Bengali poetry, spiritualism in Bengali poetry, Bangladesh Liberation war in USA, Bengali Language movement, Bangladesh liberation war, World Women’s day, Short Life sketch of Moulana Bhashani, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Life and music of Rabindronath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Shukanta, Jibanondo Das, Lalon Shah, and Hasan Raja etc. He is also involved in organizing Districts/regional associations. He was a member of board of trustee of Jalalabad Association of USA and chairman of board of trustee of Sylhet Sadar Thana association.
He was President of Bangladesh Medical Association of North America and bearer of the office for 12 years . During his tenure Bangladesh Medical Association of North America (BMANA) grew significantly. His contribution in increasing the state chapters of BMANA and its expanded activities are well appreciated . He had initiated the exchange of good will among subcontinent’s ethnic organizations (Indian and Pakistani Medical Associations in North America) and Bangladeshi American Dental and Engineering associations. He is also founder editor of BMANA newsletter and Webpage. He served as chairman of Medical education and training of BMANA for Bangladesh and member of bylaws and award committee.
He actively participated in 1969 mass movement to over throw Pakistan military dictator resulted in arrest warrant against him. He was an armed freedom fighter in 1971 during Bangladesh Liberation war. He was the member-secretary of Doctors movement of 1978 in Bangladesh which was a massive and prolonged movement resulted in a big change and many improvement including cadre structure in Bangladesh. BMA bhoban was built with the donation from the head of the state during the movement. At that time he also was one of the main architect in creating “PROCRICHY” or the very first Physician, Engineers and Agriculturist coalition for any professional movement.
After coming in USA in 1980 he has been involved in supporting activities in Bangladesh. He served as convener and coordinator of many national and international symposiums. In Bangladesh he had initiated Continuous Peritoneal dialysis program, established first Infection control program in 2005 , which is now well established and training health care workers, Initiated Medical education seminar jointly with USA based FAIMER/ECFMG and now in a process in establishing the FAIMER center in Bangladesh , Initiated emergency medicine training program in Bangladesh which now accepted as ongoing training by Ministry of Health, founding member of Ethics club in Bangladesh, He was USA co-coordinator of First NRB convention in 2007, Chairman of curriculum committee of Bangladesh sports medicine, Published a hand book for surgical trainees and distributed free to all over Bangladesh . He also arranged 6 shipments of medical equipment and 1 full shipment of medical books to different Bangladesh Medical institutions over last 10 years.
He had received many awards in Bangladesh and USA including Dr. Charlie Swartz academic award for excellent teaching in Drexel university College of Medicine in 2004, Drexel university President’s silver medal award in 2008 for humanitarian works, Chairman of Bangladesh Red cross award for improving health care in Bangladesh in 2007, life time achievement award by Bangladesh Medical Association of North America in 2011, award from Bangladesh sports science in 2012 for significant contribution, Dhaka Medical College heritage foundation in 2014 for contributing in medical education in Bangladesh, and multiple awards for leaderships from various organizations in USA and in Bangladesh.
